La Comparsa
During Dia de los Muertos in Oaxaca, Mexico, the streets become a theatre with parades of people dressed as the dead or demons; brass bands and bass drums; fireworks and smoke flares. These traditional parades symbolize the return of the dead and as they wind their way through the streets to the Zocalo, the sounds of the revellers can be heard well into the night. A selection from this series won the Bev Best Award for a photographic essay at the 101st Annual Photographic Exhibition at Hart House, University of Toronto in 2023.
